The Lady Redman Softball team defeated Tallmadge 2-1, to capture the Division II state championship at Brookside Park in Ashland, Ohio. Tallmadge was the three-time defending state champion. The game ended on a one-out wild pitch by the Tallmadge pitcher, attempting to intentionally walk Bucyrus player Rhonda Young and load the bases. On a 1-1 count, the ball got past the catcher, and Bucyrus Coach Jack Hewitt screamed for Brandy Markley, who was on third base due to a triple, to begin the seventh inning, to run! By the time the catcher gained control of the ball, Markley had touched home plate and given Bucyrus High School the first state championship in school history!

To reach the state final game, Bucyrus beat Lima Bath and Columbus Bishop Hartley in the Division II Regional Tournament and in the State Semi-finals, the Lady Redmen beat Edison South, in very close games.

Pitcher Surina Lucius, went on to play four years for the Akron University Zips and is a 2006 inductee into the Akron University Sports Hall of Fame. At Akron, Surina had a career batting average of .354 as a pitcher, second baseman and shortstop. She was MVP of Zip softball and made the All-MAC team and All-Great Lakes Regional team.
