Delbert (Deb)Koons –Holmes –Liberty (Wynford) High School. Delbert was an outstanding basketball player for the Pirates , 1955-57, averaging 23 points per game, with a high scoring game of 53 points with a win against North Robinson, the most points in Crawford County history! Deb’s brother Howard set the Holmes-Liberty scoring record on January 27, 1956, with 46 points in a win over Whetstone. That school record was shattered seven days later by his brother on February 3, when Delbert fired 53 points in a 127-32 win over North Robinson. It’s a record that still stands! Delbert scored 1,012 points his junior and senior years. Deb was named Honorable Mention All-Ohio Class B his senior year and team captain. Koons was named first team All-District in both his junior and senior years. His team was beat in the Regional final by Ayersville, who went on to win the state championship.
Deb and his wife, Marilyn, still reside in the Wynford School District. Their children, Penny, Nancy, Chuck and Doug also live in the area.
